From 8/03 through 8/04, the map search and high-speed download features were available only in a separate, stand-alone client. Now that these two features have been mostly incorporated into this website, the only software you need to install is our high-speed download client, which after some initial configuration, will run automatically off of the "fast download" links on the search results page.

Setting up the download client should be a relatively quick process, regardless of your platform. We highly recommend installing it, because the file transfer tools that come with your web browser aren't really designed for such large files. The speed upgrade factor over standard downloads will vary according to bandwidth, network traffic, etc., but is on the order of 10x.

New Features (as of 8/04)
  • You can now add new entries to the WInSAR database through this website, by clicking "add to archive" on the left sidebar. When an entry added in this way turns up as a search result, its "Location" icon will read "P2P", for peer-to-peer.
  • The map search, formerly available only in the stand-alone client, is now part of the search page on this website. It appears alongside the numeric search, so that you can specify other search criteria in addition to selecting track and frame ranges on the map.
  • The new parallel-socket file transfer client should be easier to install and and use than the old one. Your browser can be configured to open it automatically when you click a fast download link.
Prerequisites
  • Python 2.2 and wxPython (see build instructions). These will require...
    • for Linux and Windows users: any OS that supports wxWindows (a.k.a. wxWidgets)
    • for Mac users: MacOS 10.2 or later (you already have Python installed)
  • A WInSAR account on whichever servers you wish to download from

For build instructions, visit this page, which will also explain how to configure your browser to open our client automatically when a fast download link is encountered. From then on, when you click a fast download link, a file system browser should pop up as follows:

After selecting a destination directory, you'll be prompted for your WInSAR username and password, which should be the same as always. (If you never had an account, you can apply for one here.) You now get the option to save your username and password so you won't have to enter them again later.

After you have been authenticated, the file transfer will start. The display features a progress bar, the number of megabytes downloaded so far, the transfer rate in megabytes per second, the elapsed time, and the estimated time.

Unless the "Close automatically..." checkbox is checked, the abort button will become a close button when the download is complete:
